I received an Advanced Readers Copy from Net Galley in an exchange for an honest review.
My aunt has been kidnapped by vampires, and it’s up to me to save her. Only…I had no idea vampires existed. None. Nada. I’m more of a reader than a fighter, and even though I’d been wishing to escape my boring existence in the middle of nowhere, I’d give anything to have it back now if it meant my aunt was safe.
Then there’s the vampire Sebastian, who seems slightly nicer than most of the bloodsuckers I’ve run into so far. Yes, he’s the hottest being I’ve ever come across, but there’s no way I can trust him. He swears he’s helping me get answers, but there’s more to his story. Now I’m a key pawn in a raging vampire war, and I need to pick the right ally.
But my chances of surviving this war are slim at best, when the side I choose might be the one that wants me dead the most.
I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I was expecting to enjoy it, but only a little, but I absolutely devoured it. It was a different kind of vampire book. A little like Vampire Academy, but still different. In this book, we deal with different races of vampires who are drastically different. I enjoyed the dynamic conflict between the races, and was interested to see what would come of it.
Charlie was one main heroine that I actually really liked. She’s kick-ass, but still feminine. I thought her ‘relationship’ with Sebastian was actually relatively healthy when you look at other vampire books and movies with the main leads having an extremely abusive or unhealthy relationship. They stuck together through the entire book, and his dedication and devotion to not only her, but helping his kind, was admirable.
Altogether, I really loved the plot. I thought it was immersive and interesting, with good supporting characters and a decent balance of good versus evil. I’m really looking forward to the next in this series, and I can’t wait to see where it goes because the ending left us open to many different possibilities.
If you’re a fan of any kind of vampire book, you’ll probably like this one. If you like a good romance that doesn’t overshadow the action, you’ll like this one. If you like books like The Hunger Games, Vampire Academy, Darkest Minds, etc. you’ll probably like this one. I’d recommend it!
