Synopsis:

Remember, it’s only a game…

Scarlett Dragna has never left the tiny island where she and her sister, Tella, live with their powerful, and cruel, father. Now Scarlett’s father has arranged a marriage for her, and Scarlett thinks her dreams of seeing Caraval—the faraway, once-a-year performance where the audience participates in the show—are over.

But this year, Scarlett’s long-dreamt-of invitation finally arrives. With the help of a mysterious sailor, Tella whisks Scarlett away to the show. Only, as soon as they arrive, Tella is kidnapped by Caraval’s mastermind organizer, Legend. It turns out that this season’s Caraval revolves around Tella, and whoever finds her first is the winner.

Scarlett has been told that everything that happens during Caraval is only an elaborate performance. Nevertheless she becomes enmeshed in a game of love, heartbreak, and magic. And whether Caraval is real or not, Scarlett must find Tella before the five nights of the game are over or a dangerous domino effect of consequences will be set off, and her beloved sister will disappear forever.

Welcome, welcome to Caraval…beware of getting swept too far away.

Review:

Wow! I haven’t enjoyed a book like this in a while. The characters were captivating, and there were twists and turns around every corner of the chapters. I really enjoyed reading about Scarlett because I could relate to her. She only wanted what was best for her sister, even if that meant giving up much of herself. I liked her sister, Tella, because she was a wild and free spirit. Of course, we can’t forget about Julian, the infuriating male lead. He was amazing, even when he wasn’t. Legend! Oh, Legend. What a confusing and in depth character you were. I hope there’s more of you in books to come!

I haven’t been so ensnared in a book in a while. I didn’t want to put it down. The plot was entertaining and very interesting and I couldn’t seem to stop reading. The descriptors and the world that was drawn up was so imaginative and creative, and I was shocked by the amount and depth and structure in this book. I loved the premise and I loved that Scarlett had to overcome a lot of things that terrified her so she could find her sister. It’s the ultimate ‘How Far Would You Go to Save Someone You Love’ book.

I’d recommend this book to anyone who wants a mind twisting, fantastical, and intense series. The things that happen in this book are a little bit more mature, with her father and such. This will be one on the top of my lists for a while, and I can’t wait to read the next one!

  1. Glad to hear you liked it! I gave it 4 stars too I think but only because I wasn’t the biggest fan of circus stories and the whole illusion and not knowing what’s real or not. The disorientation got to me too much I think. Oh well, hopefully the next book will be better! Great review!

    1. Totally understandable! I put this book off for such a long time because of the circus likeness. Usually I’m not such a huge fan, but I loved this! I’m looking forward to the next one quite a bit. Thank you very much!!
