Seventeen-year-old Cassie Hobbes has a gift for profiling people. Her talent has landed her a spot in an elite FBI program for teens with innate crime-solving abilities, and into some harrowing situations. After barely escaping a confrontation with an unbalanced killer obsessed with her mother’s murder, Cassie hopes she and the rest of the team can stick to solving cold cases from a distance.
But when victims of a brutal new serial killer start turning up, the Naturals are pulled into an active case that strikes too close to home: the killer is a perfect copycat of Dean’s incarcerated father—a man he’d do anything to forget. Forced deeper into a murderer’s psyche than ever before, will the Naturals be able to outsmart the enigmatic killer’s brutal mind games before this copycat twists them into his web for good?
With her trademark wit, brilliant plotting, and twists that no one will see coming, Jennifer Lynn Barnes will keep readers on the edge of their seats (and looking over their shoulders) as they race through the pages of this thrilling novel.
I love these books! I think they’re all fabulous, like their own YA Criminal Minds series. Every book features a different serial killer that has its own significance to the naturals. This one featured Dean’s dad, the prolific serial killer who brands his victims… and made Dean watch. The relationships and tensions in this book were at an all time high, with Dean, Cassie and Michael all coming to a head.
As always, the plot was mainly about the action and the killing and profiling, and the romance was on the backburner. That’s what I really love about this series. We still get the element of romance, but when it comes down to it, it really is a subplot. This book was mainly focused on the profiling element, and as always, there was something for every natural to do. The amount of knowledge on the subject it takes to write these book is amazing. The amount of research that must have gone into it is impressive.
I was thoroughly amused during the entire book, and my favorite part is the fact that I can’t ever figure out who did it until the end. We are usually introduced to who the suspect is early on, but we have to use our own detective skills to try to work it all out as the naturals do. Unfortunately for me, every time I feel like I have it, I’m proven wrong. Barnes is very good with twists. The relationship between Dean and his father in this book, as well, is introduced on a more personal level, and it’s almost difficult to read.
I’d recommend this book to anyone who liked the first one and who likes murder mysteries. If you’re fascinated by criminals and don’t mind that they are teenagers who have these amazing abilities, you’ll like this series.
